1948 – Born on this day, Chris Thompson, vocals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, 1964 – The Beatles filmed the last day of train scenes for the movie A Hard Dad’s Night. During their six days of filming aboard a moving train, The Beatles traveled a total of 2,500 miles on the rails. 1968 – Bob Dylan started a ten-week run at No.1 on the UK chart with his ninth album ‘John Wesley Harding’. A US No.2 in the same year. 1979 – UK band Eddie & The Hot Rods released a new album ‘Thriller’, featuring special guest Linda McCartney on backing vocals. 1981 – Robert Plant played a secret gig at Keele University, England with his new band The Honey Drippers. 1985 – Mick Jagger released his solo single ‘Just Another Night’ a No. 12 hit in the US and No. 32 on the UK charts. 1991 – ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’ gave The Clash their only UK No.1 single after the track was used for a Levi’s TV advertisement. 2000 – PETA member Chrissie Hynde leaps into the window of a Gap in New York to protest the retailer’s alleged use of cow leather from India. 2001 – The Recording Industry Association of America sends Napster a list of 135,000 songs they want barred from the MP3-swapping Web site. 2002 – Don Henley plays a benefit show to raise money for the Linden Municipal Hospital Authority in his Texas hometown. 2007 – Brad Delp lead singer of US rock band Boston committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning 2011 –Eric Clapton has put up several personal items for auction at Bonhams in New York City. Proceeds from the event will benefit Crossroads, a treatment center that Clapton established in Antigua. 2012 – David Bowie is commemorated with a plaque on Heddon Street, London. 2016 - Sir George Martin, the fifth Beatle, dies aged 90.

Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenny Jones linked up with Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart and formed The Faces. 1973 – Paul McCartney is arrested for growing marijuana on his farm in Scotland. “Paul McCartney pleads guilty to having grown marijuana on his Scottish farm. He’s fined the British equivalent of $240. The singer explains that a fan gave him the seeds, and he didn’t know what kind of plants would blossom. 1974 – Bad Company gives its debut performance in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1975 – The NME reports that the Rolling Stones are trying out guitarist Wayne Perkins as a replacement for Mick Taylor. 1982 – Elton John begins tour of New Zealand, his first for two years. 1987 – Bob Seger tells an audience at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena he’s on his last tour. The rocker returned to the road shortly afterward. 2004 – The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office charge troubled ex-Hole leader Courtney Love with disorderly conduct. 2004 – Jack White of the White Stripes pleads guilty to simple assault and battery and is sentenced to probation and anger management therapy. White beat up the lead singer of the Von Bondies at Detroit’s Magic Stick club in December 2003. 2009 – A blue plaque in honour of The Who drummer Keith Moon was unveiled on the site of the Marquee Club in Soho, London, where in 1964 the band played the first of 29 gigs there. Fans on scooters turned up to pay tribute to Moon. 2011 – Phil Collins of Genesis, Singer and drummer has announced his retirement so that he can spend more time with his family and sons.

Broadcasters vote against Top 40 formatting recently adopted by American stations. 1964 – The Dave Clark Five bring their Tottenham sound to The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time tonight. 1973 – While attending a showcase concert given by his new signing, Bruce Springsteen, famed Columbia A&R man John Hammond suffers a heart attack. He survives. 1975 – In London, the audience at the Hammersmith Odeon learns about Chuck Berry’s unusual concert practices when he walks off stage after 58 minutes. 1976 – Madame Tussaud’s waxworks in London unveils a likeness of Elton John. 1987 – The first five Beatles albums, Please Please Me, With the Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night, Beatles for Sale and Help! were released on Compact disc. 2003 – Red Hot Chili Pepper singer Anthony Kiedis signs a deal with Hyperion Books to write his life story. 2007 – Rhett Hutchence the brother of INXS singer Michael Hutchence defended his decision to sell some of the late star’s belongings online saying he needed money to set up home with his new girlfriend. Items in the auction included lyrics, T-shirts and a fax his brother had sent to his then girlfriend Kylie Minogue. 2010 – Bret Michaels says he has nothin’ to apologize for about “Nothin’ to Lose,” his new song featuring Miley Cyrus.
