1946 – Gram Parsons (Cecil Connor) of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers is born in Winter Haven, Fla. 1948 – Guitarist Don McDougal of the Guess Who is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. 1957 – Air Supply guitarist David Moyse is born. 1959 – Bryan Adams is born in Vancouver, Canada. 1965 – In today’s English Jewish Chronicle, Princess Margaret says, “I think the Beatles believe that MBE stands for Mister Brian Epstein. 1965 – Decca Records releases the Who’s new single, “My Generation.” 1970 – Led Zeppelin release “Immigrant Song” as a single in the U.S. 1973 – The Who perform in Newcastle, England, to support their Quadrophenia album. During the performance, a backing tape turns out to be 15 seconds behind Keith Moon’s vigorous drumming. In his frustration, Pete Townshend storms off stage and doesn’t come back until a half-hour later. 1987 – ‘Tunnel of Love’ becomes Bruce Springsteen’s fourth #1 album. 1995 – Queen releases its first studio album since the Deaths of Freddie Mercury. “Made In Heaven” includes Mercury’s final vocal track on a song titled “Mother Love.” 1999 – The members of Van Halen announce that Gary Cherone is leaving the band. 2000 - The Who made a guest appearance on The Simpsons’ 250th episode. Pete Townshend didn’t voice himself as he thought somebody else would like in Yellow Submarine. Townshend’s brother Paul provided the voice of Pete. 2003 – Johnny Cash enjoys a posthumous triumph at the Country Music Awards. The late Man in Black wins Album of the Year, Single of the Year and Music Video of the Year for “Hurt.” 2003 – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are forced to abandon a U.K. concert after a giant crack appears in the floor of the venue. 2005 – Guitarist Link Wray died aged 76. Wray was credited with inventing ‘fuzz’ guitar after punching a hole in a speaker giving him a distorted guitar sound.

1940 – Delbert McClinton, the country star who taught John Lennon how to play harmonica, is born in Lubbock, Texas. 1956 – Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman-Scott is born in Hereford, England. He died of a drug overdose in 1982. 1961 – Bob Dylan gives a concert at the Carnegie Chapter Hall in New York. Only 43 people attend. 1963 – The Beatles appear on London’s U.K. Royal Variety Show, which is attended by the Queen Mother. 1968 – At Abbey Road Studios, Pink Floyd record “Point Me at the Sky” and “Careful With That Axe, Eugene. 1969 – Led Zeppelin play a disastrous gig at Ontario’s Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. John Bonham is too ill to perform “Moby Dick.” Jimmy Page blows out his amplifier. And only 2,000 people turn up to see the band. 1973 – At London’s Rainbow Theater, Pink Floyd and Soft Machine perform a benefit for Machine drummer Robert Wyatt. Wyatt was paralyzed after falling from an open window during a party. He later becomes a respected singer/songwriter, recording the definitive version of Elvis Costello’s “Shipbuilding.” 1976 – A Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band concert at New York’s Palladium Theatre is delayed when someone phones in a bomb threat. Springsteen later jokes it was done by a former manager who’s suing him. 1978 – Boston plays in the city of Boston for the first time, a sold-out show at the Boston Garden. 1978 – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young are sued by a former bass player. Greg Reeves wants $1 million in unpaid royalties. 1991 – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame admits Bobby “Blue” Bland, Booker T. & the MG’s, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, the Isley Brothers, Sam & Dave, and the Yardbirds. 1992 – Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin sign to the music publisher Warner/Chappell for an unprecedented $39 million. 1994 – Fred “Sonic” Smith, guitarist with the MC5 and husband of Patti Smith, dies of a heart attack in Detroit. He was 45. 2003 – Ryan Adams releases his third solo album Rock N Roll, featuring appearances by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Adams’ current girlfriend, actress Parker Posey. 2003 – VH1 films the opening night of Kid Rock’s winter tour in Detroit for a Christmas special. Keeping it seasonal, Rock performs “Frosty the Blowman” and “Santa Baby.” 2007 – The Eagles went to No.1 on the UK album chart for the first time ever – 33 years after their debut album On the Border. 2010 – Rush is honored at the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards.

1957 – Sun Records releases Jerry Lee Lewis’ definitive single “Great Balls of Fire.” The single becomes his biggest hit, peaking at No. 2. 1958 -Elvis Presley went on maneuvers for the first time with the US Army’s 32nd Tank Regiment near the German, Czech border. 1964 – The mayor of Cleveland bans the Rolling Stones following a 17-year-old’s fall from a balcony during their gig at the Public Hall. 1977 – A Santa Monica (Calif.) Superior Court orders Bob Dylan to return his children to his estranged wife, Sara. He had been granted temporary custody while his ex- set up house in Hawaii. 1977 – Elton John announces he’s retiring from the stage during a concert in London. By February 1979, he was at it again. 1978 – The Cars arrive in England to begin a mini-tour promoting their debut single, “Just What I Needed.” 1991 – More than 300,000 people attend a free concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park in memory of rock promoter Bill Graham. Among the acts performing are the Grateful Dead; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Joan Baez; Santana; and Journey (which reunited for the event). 1992 – The Grateful Dead announce they are discontinuing their tradition of playing a San Francisco concert on New Year’s Eve. 1995 – Hootie & the Blowfish reach an out-of-court settlement with Bob Dylan. The band had used a portion of Dylan’s lyrics in its hit “Only Wanna Be With You.” 1997 – Metallica came to a out of court agreement with a fan who claimed he lost his sense of smell after being dropped on his head by fans at one of their shows four years earlier. 2003 – Making a clear indication that nothing is beneath them, Aerosmith perform the Hank Williams Jr. classic theme song “Are You Ready For Some Football?” live on Monday Night Football. 2004 – Guitar legend Eric Clapton is made a CBE at Buckingham Palace. 2005 – With two trophies apiece, Coldplay and Green Day are the big winners at the 12th MTV Europe Music Awards, held at the Atlantic Pavilion in Lisbon. 2011 – Cory Smoot, the guitarist who portrayed the character of Flattus Maximus dies.

1944 – Keyboardist Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake and Palmer is born in the U.K 1947 – Bassist Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull is born. 1963 – Bass player Bobby Dall, better known as the quiet one in Poison, is born in Florida. 1963 – Dion storms out of a taping of the English TV show Ready Steady Go! after complaining that the go-go dancers are distracting him from his performance. 1967 – Pink Floyd spend the day at Abbey Road Studios in London recording “Paintbox.” The Rick Wright composition will be the B-side to their third single, “Apples and Oranges.” 1968 – Cream perform at Madison Square Garden during their farewell tour. The band is given a platinum disc commemorating American sales of the double album Wheels of Fire. 1973 – Ringo Starr releases his star-studded album Ringo. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison all perform on the record. 1976 – In an interview with the BBC program The Old Grey Whistle Test, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and manager Peter Grant explain they got the idea to make The Song Remains the Same after using large TV screens at their 1975 Earl’s Court concerts. 1979 - The Who’s second musical film Quadrophenia was released in the U.S. The film featured the acting debut of Sting where he played Ace Face. 2007 – Ozzy Osbourne claimed his reputation had been tarnished after a party supposedly involving him was organized by US police officers to round up missing criminal suspects. 2007 – The mighty Led Zeppelin’s eagerly-awaited reunion concert in London was postponed for two weeks after guitarist Jimmy Page broke a finger.
