1960 – Michael Stipe of R.E.M. is born. 1962 – In a sign of their burgeoning local popularity, the as-yet-unsigned Beatles top Mersey Beat‘s poll for best group. 1963 – In London, Bob Dylan spends his second day shooting the TV play Madhouse in Castle Street. 1965 – Leo Fender sells Fender Guitars for $13 million. 1970 – George Harrison records the second guitar solo for “Let It Be.” It’s the last Beatles recording session to feature Harrison, Paul McCartney and George Martin, as well as the last recording session of the Beatles as a band. 1971 – At London’s Abbey Road studios, Pink Floyd begin sessions for Meddle, the follow-up to their 1970 album Atom Heart Mother. The same month director Stanley Kubrick asks the band if he can use Atom Heart Mother as the soundtrack for his film, A Clockwork Orange. The band say no. 1973 – Australia announces that they have placed an “entry ban” on an un-named member of the Rolling Stones. The Immigration Ministry lifts the ban five days later, but the Stone’s identity is never revealed. 1973 – Rolling Stone magazine announces that The Allman Brothers Band has hired Lamar Williams as the replacement for Berry Oakley, who died in a motorcycle crash in 1972. 1976 – Beatles road manager Mal Evans comes to a bizarre end in Los Angeles. He’s shot by LAPD marksmen after threatening them with a rifle at his girlfriend’s apartment. 1977 – The Sex Pistols shocked passengers and airline staff at Heathrow Airport when they spat and vomited boarding a plane to Amsterdam. 1986 – Thin Lizzy’s bassist-singer Phil Lynott dies aged 35 in the intensive care unit of Salisbury Infirmary in England. His kidneys, liver and heart failed due to blood poisoning and multiple internal abscesses caused by drug abuse. 2000 – Carlos Santana’s remarkable 1999 comeback receives further validation when the veteran Latin rocker is nominated for 10 Grammy Awards. 2001 – Police raid a record store in Glasgow, Scotland and confiscate T-shirts promoting the Goth metal band Cradle of Filth. 2001 – Courtney Love filed a lawsuit against her alleged stalker claiming that Lesley Barber, the ex-wife of her current boyfriend Jim Barber, drove over her foot. This had forced her to forfeit her role in a forthcoming film and lost her the £200,000, ($340,000) fee that went with it. 2004 – Ray Davies of the Kinks is shot in the leg in New Orleans. Ray was pursuing two men who stole his lady companion’s purse. 2006 – The house where Johnny Cash lived for 35 years was bought by Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb.

1926 – George Martin, who produced most of the Beatles’ most memorable recordings, is born in London. 1945 – Stephen Stills is born in Dallas. 1946 – Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones is born in Sidcup. 1963 – The Beatles begin their first headlining tour in Scotland at the Two Red Shoes Ballroom in Elgin. The promoter bills them as “The ‘Love Me Do’ Boys – The Beatles.” 1964 – The Beatles’ “She Loves You” is heard for the first time in the United States when Jack Paar screens footage of the group on his television show. 1964 – Guitarist Raymond McGinley of Scotland’s Teenage Fanclub is born. 1967 – Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys refuses to be sworn in after receiving a U.S. Army draft notice, saying he is a conscientious objector. 1967 – Benjamin Darvill, harmonica player with the Crash Test Dummies, is born. 1969 – Two Virgins arrives at Newark Airport in New Jersey. However, the shipment of 30,000 copies of the album is confiscated by police, who object to what they call the “pornographic” picture of the naked couple on the front cover. 1974 – Bob Dylan and the Band open a landmark 39-date U.S. tour in Chicago. 1992 – Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr marries British actress Patsy Kensit in London. The actress was previously married to Big Audio Dynamite ex-keyboardist Dan Donovan. Kerr ended a six-year marriage to Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde. 2003 – Kevin MacMichael, guitarist with the Cutting Crew dies aged 51. 2011 – The white two-piece suit John Lennon wore on the cover of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album is been sold at auction in Connecticut for $46,000.

1942 – Born on this day, Chick Churchill, keyboards, Ten Years After. 1955 – Five thousand people attend Johnny Ace’s funeral in Memphis. The R&B star accidentally killed himself in a game of Russian roulette. 1964 – The Rolling Stones perform their new single “I Wanna Be Your Man” on Top of the Pops TV programme. 1968 – The entire shipment of John and Yoko’s album ‘Two Virgins’ was seized by authorities in New Jersey due to the full frontal nude photograph of the couple on the cover. The album was eventually wrapped in plain brown paper in record stores. 1969 – Led Zeppelin played the first of four nights at the Whisky A Go-Go, Los Angeles during the bands first North American tour. Support group was the Alice Cooper band. 1969 – Shooting for the Beatles documentary Let It Be begins as the band meet at London’s Twickenham Studios to rehearse songs for a worldwide satellite broadcast. 1971 – The George Harrison album ‘All Things Must Pass’ started a seven week run at No.1 on the US album chart, making Harrison the first solo Beatle to score a US No.1 album. 1972 – Syd Barrett plays an unannounced solo gig at King’s College Cellar, Cambridge. 1975 – Born on this day, Douglas Seann Robb, Hoobastank. 1975 – The Allman Brothers Band is named “Outstanding Community Organization” by the Georgia Department of Corrections. 1975 – In efforts to defend himself from deportation, John Lennon and his lawyers are granted access to Department of Immigration files. Lennon wants to find out if he’s been barred from the U.S. because of drug use, or his remarks about President Richard Nixon. 1976 – Bad Company, Nazareth, Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance, The Pretty Things and Be Bop Deluxe all appeared at the second day of the Great British Music Festival at London’s Olympia. 1979 – Sid Vicious went on trial in New York accused of murdering his girlfriend Nancy Spungen three months earlier. 1994 – Meat Loaf started a three-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Bat Out Of Hell 2-Back Into Hell.’ 2005 – Green Day top the first UK albums chart of the year with American Idiot. 2009 – According to official US sales figures AC/DC were the biggest sellers of 2008 with over 3.4m sales.

1942 – Singer Joe McDonald of Country Joe & the Fish is born in El Monte, Calif. 1950 – Morgan Fisher is born. As well as playing keyboards for English acts like the Love Affair and Mott the Hoople, Fisher also produced albums by the Dead Kennedys, Wayne/Jayne County and Cherry Vanilla. 1962 - The Beatles perform their first audition for Decca Records in London. However, the company’s A&R man is unimpressed by their 15-song set of standards and originals. He passes on them, and signs the Tremeloes instead. 1965 – The New Musical Express reports that the Nashville Teens, the Zombies and the Hullabaloos have all been denied work visas that would permit them to perform in the United States. Unfortunately, the English groups have already entered the country to start a tour 1967 – The Grateful Dead and Big Brother & the Holding Company perform at the New Year’s Wail/Whale in San Francisco. Hell’s Angels hosts the bash to thank Haight-Ashbury hippies for bailing Angel Chocolate George from jail. 1976 – Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant walks unassisted for the first time since his August 1975 car accident in Greece. 1984 – Alexis Korner, whose band Blues Incorporated gave many English musicians their start in the business, dies aged 55 of lung cancer in London. 1999 – Club Days by Van Halen is released. 2000 – George Harrison leaves hospital following a knife attack at his English mansion by a crazed fan. Doctors tell him that he will be able to play the guitar again, despite suffering a hand wound. 2002 – Bush leader Gavin Rossdale proposes to his longtime girlfriend Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. She says “Yes.” 2002 – Veteran rock guitarist Eric Clapton marries Melia McEnery, his 25-year-old American girlfriend, in a private ceremony that includes the christening of his two daughters. 2011 - Rock ‘n’ roll great Chuck Berry was feeling fine and headed back to his hometown of St. Louis, associates said on Sunday, hours after the musician fell ill during a New Year’s performance in Chicago.
