1948 – Chris Squire (Yes) is born. 1963 – Jason Newstead (Bassist for Metallica) is born. 1966 – John Lennon, in an interview in the London Evening Standard, creates international controversy with his remark that the Beatles “are probably bigger than Jesus right now.” 1967 - “Ruby Tuesday” by The Rolling Stones reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart for one week, making it the group’s fourth number one single. 1967 – Born on this day, Evan Dando, guitar, vocals, The Lemonheads. 1970 – In Tampa, Fla., Janis Joplin is fined $200 for using obscene language during a November 1969 concert there. 1971 – The Rolling Stones kicked off a 9-date UK tour at Newcastle City Hall, supported by The Groundhogs. Also on this day The Stones announced that they were to become the UK’s first rock and roll tax exiles, residing in France. 1973: Pink Floyd kicked off their tour in support of Dark Side of the Moon at the Dane County Memorial Coliseum in Madison, WI. 1977 – The Rolling Stones played the first of two nights at the El Mocambo a small club in Toronto, Canada. 1982 – Rolling Stone announces that Moon Unit Zappa and Dweezil Zappa have united to form Fred Zeppelin. Their first single, they say, will be called “My Mother Is a Space Cadet.” 1983: During a concert at the Convention Center in Louisville, KY, Neil Young collapsed onstage due to exhaustion. 1986 – The Band’s pianist, Richard Manuel, commits suicide by hanging himself. 2003 – At a show in Jacksonville, Fla., Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band play Hank Ballard’s “Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go,” in honor of the songwriter, who died on March 2. 2011 -Courtney Love settle her lawsuit with Dawn Simorangkir, fashion designer, who claimed that Love defamed her in a series of messages on Twitter last year.

1966 – Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay formed Buffalo Springfield in Los Angeles. 1967 – Jeff Beck Group, featuring Ron Wood and Aynsley Dunbar, makes its stage debut in London (at Finsbury Park Astoria). 1967 – After a promoter refuses to pay the Animals an advance for their concert in Ottawa, the band decides not to play. The audience riots and causes $5,000 in damages. 1968 – The Grateful Dead celebrate their move from Haight-Ashbury to Marin County with a special farewell concert in San Francisco. 1969 – Led Zeppelin recorded their first BBC Radio 1 ‘Top Gear’ session during the afternoon at the Playhouse Theatre in London, England. 1973 – Slade: Cum on Feel the Noize UK 45 No. 1 Chart Topper. 1978 – Van Halen opens its first tour at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. The group’s contract specifies that M&Ms be provided to the group during the stint with the brown candies removed. 1983 – A member of Hell’s Angels testifies to a Senate judiciary panel. He says the infamous motorcycle gang’s California chapter has had a murder contract out on Mick Jagger for the past 14 years and has tried to kill him twice. 1986 – Metallica released their highly influential album, Master of Puppets, considered by many in the metal community to be the best metal album of all time. 1994 – The Smashing Pumpkins were banned from appearing on BBC TV’s ‘Top Of The Pops’, due to the content of the songs lyrics. The bands single ‘Disarm’ was this weeks highest new entry. 1999 – US music professor Peter Jeffrey went to court to sue The Smashing Pumpkins, their promoters and a company who make ear plugs after claiming his hearing was damaged at a concert in Connecticut. 2003 – Ray Jackson who found fame with Lindisfarne took out legal action against Rod Stewart over his 1970s hit song ‘Maggie May.’ Jackson claimed he came up with the worldwide hit’s classic mandolin melody and claimed he may have lost at least £1m because he was not credited for the track’s distinctive “hook.” 2009 – To celebrate the release of U2’s twelfth studio album and their appearance every night for a week on The Late Show with David Letterman, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg temporarily renamed part of 53rd street in Midtown Manhattan U2 Way. 2012 – Guitarist extraordinaire, Ronnie Montrose passed away.

1942 – Lou Reed (Louis Firbank) is born in Freeport, N.Y. 1947 – Keyboardist Josef Chirowski, who has played with Alice Cooper and Peter Gabriel, is born in Germany. 1948 – Rory Gallagher is born in Ballyshannon. 1956 – Mark Evans (AC/DC) is born. 1962 – Jon Bon Jovi (Bon Jovi) is born. 1964 – Beatles begin work on their first movie Hard Day’s Night in London, with director Richard Lester. 1964 – George Harrison meets his (and Eric Clapton’s) future spouse Pattie Boyd. 1968 – Blue Cheer give birth to heavy metal when their interpretation of “Summertime Blues” is released. The single goes to No. 14. 1975 – Linda McCartney is arrested on charges of marijuana possession after Los Angeles police pull the McCartneys over for allegedly running a red light and smell a familiar musk emerging from their Lincoln Continental. Driver Paul is not charged. 1983 – Compact disc launched. 1985 – Bryan Adams’ Reckless hits UK LP chart. 1991 – 21 years after its first release ‘All Right Now’, by Free made No.2 in the UK singles chart after being re-issued to coincide with its use in a Wrigleys Chewing gum TV ad. 1999 – Neil Young launches a solo tour in Vancouver, B.C. It is his first completely solo outing in more than 25 years. 1999 – The Las Vegas House of Blues opens with a performance by Bob Dylan. U2’s Bono joins him to sing “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” 2007 – Jimi Hendrix was crowned the ‘wildest guitar hero’ of all-time in a poll of music fans for Classic Rock magazine. 2008 – Canadian guitarist, singer, Jeff Healey, died of cancer. 2010 – At a Ozzy Osbourne book signing at a Florida Barnes & Noble turned dramatic when the bomb squad was called in, due to a fan with some marijuana and homemade fireworks.

1942 – Born on this day, Jerry Fisher, vocals, Blood Sweat & Tears. 1944 – The Who’s Roger Daltrey is born in Hammersmith. 1958, Buddy Holly and the Crickets began their only UK tour, a 25 date, twice- nightly package with Des O’Connor, Gary Miller, The Tanner Sisters and Ronnie Keene and his Orchestra. 1963 – Born on this day, Rob Affuso, Skid Row. 1966 – Gene Clark of The Byrds announced he was leaving the group due to his fear of flying. 1967 – Working at Abbey Road studios, London, The Beatles started recording a new song John Lennon song ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.’ 1968 – Elton John’s first single ‘I’ve Been Loving You" was released on the Phillips label, it didn’t chart. 1969 – Jim Morrison of The Doors was charged with lewd and lascivious behaviour during a show in Miami. He was found guilty and sentenced to eight months hard labour. Morrison died in Paris while the sentence was on appeal. 1970 – Charles Manson’s album “Lie” is released on Awareness Records. Profits go to Manson’s defense. 1970 – Appearing at The Northcote Arms, Middlesex, England, Mott The Hoople supported by Genesis. 1974 – Queen kick off their first headlining tour of England in Blackpool. 1975 – Bob Dylan started a two-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Blood On The Tracks’ his second US No.1 album. 1975 – The Eagles went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Best Of My Love’, the first of five US No.1’s for the band. 1977 – Sara Lowndes Dylan files for divorce from Bob Dylan in Santa Monica, Calif. 1982 – Jimmy Page releases his first solo album, the soundtrack to Death Wish II. 1994 – Nirvana played their final ever concert when they appeared at The Terminal Einz in Munich, Germany. The 3,000 capacity venue was a small Airport Hanger. The power went off during the show so they played an impromptu acoustic set including a version of The Cars ‘My Best Friend’s Girl.’ 1995 – Bruce Springsteen wins four Grammys for “Streets of Philadelphia” from the Tom Hanks film “Philadelphia.” 1997 – A Motley Crue fan who claimed his hearing had been irreparably damaged after a show in New Jersey had his lawsuit thrown out of court. The judge told Clifford Goldberg who had sat near the front of the stage, knew the risk he was taking. 2002 – Limp Bizkit’s tour manager testifies at an inquest into a fan’s death at a 2001 Australian concert. He said the show was understaffed and poorly managed. 2010 – Dave Mustaine says police were called to the set of a video shoot because Megadeth were using a tank in their promo film.
