1910 – Bluesman Howlin’ Wolf (Chester Arthur Burnett) is born in West Point, Miss. 1964 – In the midst of their first American tour, the Rolling Stones pause at Chicago’s Chess Studios, where they lay down tracks for their album 12×5, which features the hit “It’s All Over Now.” Their heroes Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon visit them over the next two days in the studio. 1966 – Big Brother & the Holding Company perform with their new lead singer, Janis Joplin, for the first time. 1971 – A crowd gets so excited during a performance by Jethro Tull in Denver that police fire tear gas on them. 1974 – The Who play the first of four sellout nights at Madison Square Garden in New York. Tickets for the shows sold out in 60 hours. 1975 – The Eagles release One of These Nights. 1976 – At Seattle’s Kingdome, Paul McCartney & Wings play for a crowd of 67,100, setting an indoor attendance record. 1978 – The Rolling Stones open a tour in Lakewood, Fla. Bill Wyman falls off stage. 1981 – It’s a great day for music as Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, John Wetton, and Carl Palmer form Asia. 1981 – Bob Dylan kicks off a tour in support of Shot of Love in Chicago. However, the record company delays the release of the album until the summer, perhaps righteously scared at the Christian direction Dylan had gone in on his last two records. 1984 - Rush and Ozzy Osbourne co-headlined the Texas Jam Festival at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The other acts on the bill were Bryan Adams, .38 Special & Gary Moore. 1986 - Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia lapsed into a five day diabetic coma which resulted in The Grateful Dead cancelling the remainder of their tour. 1992 - The publishers of John Lee Hooker’s song “Boogie Chillen” filed a lawsuit against ZZ Top, claiming that “La Grange” had ripped off Hooker’s song. This lawsuit would be dismissed five months later. 1992 – A Los Angeles judge throws out a $25 million palimony suit brought against British rock singer Rod Stewart by Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kelly Emberg, his longtime girlfriend. She had claimed the couple lived together as husband and wife. 2001 – Flooding in the Houston area forces the cancellation of a concert by Journey with Peter Frampton and John Waite. 2004 – Peter Garrett, the former lead singer of Midnight Oil announces he will run for a seat on the Australian parliament as a Labour Party candidate.

It was during this tour that The Beatles’ fans started throwing jelly babies at them while they were on stage, after an off-the-cuff remark on television that George Harrison enjoyed eating them. 1967 – Everett Dean Felber, bassist for Hootie & The Blowfish, is born in Bethesda, Md. 1969 - The Rolling Stones announced that Mick Taylor would be replacing the recently departed Brian Jones on guitar. 1970 – Princeton University gives Bob Dylan an honorary doctorate in music. 1972 – Record executive John Hammond makes Bruce Springsteen his latest signing to CBS. 1977 – George Harrison divorces Patti Boyd, who would later marry Harrison buddy Eric Clapton. 1986 – Bob Dylan begins the American leg of his True Confessions tour at San Diego’s Sports Arena. 1998 – Oasis singer Liam Gallagher and Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall were involved in a brawl at The Metropolitan Hotel, London. 2002 – Peter Gabriel marries longtime companion Meah Flynn at the Li Capanni hotel he owns near Sardinia’s Emerald Coast. 2002 – It was announced that Rolling Stone Mick Jagger was to be given a knighthood for his services to music. 2003 – Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington is released from a Los Angeles hospital after suffering crippling stomach pains. Docs say a parasite or intestinal disorder was likely to blame. 2005 – U2 frontman Bono urges the European Union to step up efforts to support the disadvantaged in Africa. 2009 - The Who Sings My Generation the debut U.S. album by The Who was selected for the National Recording Registry of the U.S. Library of Congress as the album was deemed culturally significant.

1942 – Chuck Negron vocalist for Three Dog Night is born 1944 – Boz Scaggs (William Royce Scaggs) is born in Ohio. He plays with Steve Miller in 1959 and again from 1967-69. 1947 – Mick Box, guitarist for Uriah Heep is born. 1954 – United States record companies distributed the first ever 45rpm vinyl discs. 1967 – The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ went to No.1 in the UK. Costing £25,000 ($42,500) to produce the album was recorded over 700 hours of studio time. It was also the first album to print the lyrics on the sleeve. The album spent 27 weeks at No.1 on the UK chart. 1969 – Founder member of The Rolling Stones Brian Jones announced that he was leaving the group, saying that he no longer saw ‘eye to eye’ with the rest of the band. 1970 – Deep Purple had their van and equipment impounded by East German police while on an European tour, after mistakenly driving too close to the border. 1970 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Long and Winding Road,” The Beatles. 1974 – Bill Wyman became the first Rolling Stone to release a solo album with ‘Monkey Grip’, 1974 – David Bowie started a four-week run at the top of the UK charts with his third No.1 album ‘Diamond Dogs’. 1974 – Keyboard player Rick Wakeman announced that he was leaving Yes. 1974 – Paul McCartney and Wings went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Band On The Run’, his third solo US No.1, a No.3 hit in the UK. 1989 – At a Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior’s press conference, vegetarian Chrissie Hynde claimed that she once firebombed a McDonalds restaurant. The following day a McDonalds in Milton Keynes was firebombed and Hynde was threatened with legal action. 1991 – Extreme went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘More Than Words’, a No.2 hit in the UK. 1991 – Bruce Springsteen married Patti Scialfa, at their Beverley Hills home. 1998 – Surviving Beatles Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, Sting, Pete Townshend and Sir Elton John are among the mourners at a private service for McCartney’s late wife, Linda, at St. Martins-in-the-Fields church in London 1998 – The Rolling Stones announce that they are postponing the U.K. dates on their current European tour until June of the following year. 1998 – Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller and Martin Carr from The Boo Radleys were all involved in a fight at Dingwalls, Camden in London. 2001 – AC/DC, The Offspring, Queens Of The Stone Age and Megadeth all appeared at the Milton Keynes Bowl, England; tickets cost £28.50 ($48.45). 2003 – Former Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett is made a Member of the Order of Australia by Queen Elizabeth II. 2003 – Evanescence started a four-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Bring Me To Life.’ 2003 – Led Zeppelin were at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘How The West Was Won’, the bands seventh US No.1 album. 2009 – Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford will be missing the opening string of dates of the band’s Guitar Hero tour while he recovers from recent surgery.

1944 – Byrds guitarist Clarence White is born this day 1958 – Prince (Prince Roger Nelson) is born in Minneapolis. 1964 – During their first ever US tour The Rolling Stones were booed off stage at a gig in San Antonio, Texas. Some performing Monkeys who had been the act on before the Stones were brought back on stage for another performance. 1966 - Eric Kretz-drummer for Stone Temple Pilots born today 1967 - Dave Navarro-guitarist for Jane’s Addiction is born 1968 – Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane all appeared for the first of a three night run at the Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, California. 1969 – Blind Faith makes its live debut in a London park. 150,000 people attend the free performance. 1969 – Keith Richards and his partner Anita Pallenburg were involved in a car crash near their home in Sussex. Richards escaped serious injury but Pallenburg was taken to hospital with a broken collarbone and the car was a write-off. 1969 – Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell both appeared on the first ABC TV Johnny Cash Show from Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. 1970 – The Who performs its rock opera, “Tommy,” at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House. 1975 – Elton John’s album ‘Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboys’, went to No.1 on the US album chart, the first album ever to enter the US chart at No.1. 1977 – Led Zeppelin played the first of six sold out nights at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. 1987 – David Bowie played a concert in West Berlin in front of the Reichstag with the speakers pointing towards the nearby Berlin Wall where thousands of young East Berliners stood and listened. 1990 – The Black Crowes played their debut UK gig at the Marquee in London. 1991 – During their Use Your Illusion Tour, Guns n’ Roses played the first of two nights at the CNE Stadium in Toronto, Canada. 1994 – Grace Slick is ordered to serve 200 hours of community service and attend four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings after being found guilty of pointing a gun at police in March. 2007 – The funeral of guitarist, singer Bo Diddley took place in Gainesville, Florida. 2008 – 3 Doors Down were at No.1 on the US album chart with their self titled second US No.1. 2012 – Bob Welch, an early member of rock band Fleetwood Mac died

The couple wed in a civil ceremony in May. 1994 – A son, Evan Shane, is born in Los Angeles to Paul and Pamela Bowen Stanley. 1995 – Pink Floyd releases its two-CD live album, “Pulse.” 1997 – Following Phil Collins’ departure, Genesis announce that his replacement is Ray Wilson, formerly with the band Stiltskin. 2000 – Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood checks himself into rehab in London. Wood, who is accompanied by his wife, is admitted to the Priory Clinic in an effort to overcome his addiction to alcohol before the Rolling Stones launch another world tour. 2002 – Founding Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby succumbs to AIDS after an eight-year battle with the disease. Crosby, who co-wrote many of the pop-metal band’s best-known songs, is 42. 2003 – Officials at Six Flags in Darien Lakes, N.Y., ban Marilyn Manson’s Ozzfest appearance in August. 2004 – Metallica play a rare gig without drummer Lars Ulrich, who is sidelined with an undisclosed illness. Slipknot’s Joey Jordison and Slayer’s Dave Lombardo fill in for Ulrich, along with a Metallica drum tech, at the Download Festival in England’s Donington Park. 2004 – ZZ Top are nearly swept offstage by a rainstorm at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival in Dallas. 2006 – Billy Preston, the Fifth Beatle dies aged 59.
