Today in rock history Thursday June 30th 1944 – Vocalist Glenn Shorrock of the Little River Band is born in Rochester 1963 – Yngwie Malmsteen is born in Stockholm Sweden 1966 – The Beatles played the first of three concerts at the Nippon Budokan Hall, Japan. 1973 – George Harrison knocked Paul McCartney from the top of the US singles chart with ‘Give Me Love, Give Me Peace On Earth’. His second US No.1, a No.8 hit in the UK. 1974 – Gregg Allman marries Cher four days after her divorce from Sonny Bono. After nine days, Cher announces she wants another divorce. They separate and divorce about 3 1/2 years later. 1989 – The surviving Beatles sue for an injunction against Dave Clark, formerly of the Dave Clark Five, banning him from selling copies of the old Ready Steady Go! TV show featuring the Beatles. The case is later settled out of court. 1990 – Pink Floyd headline the Knebworth festival 1994 – Virgin Records rushes the Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge into stores early after the album is played on the radio. 1996 – Neil Young premieres his album, “Broken Arrow” via the Internet. The album is slated for release on July 2, two days after its technologically advanced premiere. 1999 – Eric Clapton performs a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden for his Crossroads rehab center in Antigua. His guests include Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, and Bob Dylan. 2004 – Kinks founder member Dave Davies was left paralysed on the right-hand side of his body after suffering a stroke. The 57-year-old guitarist and brother of fellow Kinks star Ray Davies had been promoting his solo material when he collapsed. 2004 – David Bowie cancels the remainder of his Reality tour after suffering a pinched nerve in his shoulder. 2013 – Lou Reed was rushed to a Long Island hospital! Reed, who recently received a liver transplant, reportedly had been sick to his stomach a number of times and there were concerns that his body might be rejecting the new organ.

1948 – Drummer Ian Paice of Deep Purple is born in Nottingham 1953 – Don Dokken is born this day 1956 – In a step back for rock, Elvis Presley appears on Steve Allen’s TV show to sing “Hound Dog” to an actual basset hound. 1957 – Buddy Holly records “Peggy Sue.” 1964 – Touring Australia The Beatles played two shows at the Festival Hall, Brisbane. Over 8,000 fans had waited until after midnight to greet the group as they landed at Brisbane Airport. 1966 – Some 500 police are needed to contain the crowd when the Beatles play Tokyo. 1967 – Two days after Mick Jagger is found guilty of drug possession and jailed, Keith Richards goes on trial for similar charges stemming from a February raid on his home. Judge Leslie Block finds him guilty of allowing his house to be used for smoking cannabis and sentences him to a year in jail. Jagger is sentenced to three months in jail. Their sentences are later suspended following a public outcry. 1968 – Pink Floyd release A Saucerful of Secrets. The Floyd celebrate by performing a free show in London’s Hyde Park with Jethro Tull, Roy Harper, and T. Rex. 1968 – A free concert was held in London’s Hyde Park with Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Roy Harper. 1969 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience play their last concert together at the Denver Pop Festival in Mile High Stadium. 1973 – Ian Gillan leaves Deep Purple after a show in Japan. 1974 – There’s a change in the lineup of future Canadian prog superstars Rush as Neil Peart replaces John Rustey on the drum stool today. Neil is considered by some to be one of the best drummers or the Rock era. 1975 – In Oakland, Calif., Elton John joins the Doobie Brothers on stage to duet on “Listen to the Music.” 1975 – Tim Buckley dies of a heart attack at the age of 28. 1978 – Peter Frampton suffers a broken arm and cracked ribs in an auto wreck in the Bahamas. 1979 – Born on this day, Tim McCord, bass, Evanescence 1985 – John Lennon’s 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V limousine, with psychedelic paintwork, sold for a record sum of $3,006,385, (£1,768,462) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. 1988 – Nirvana, Mudhoney and Tad all appeared at the Moore Theatre, Seattle. 1993 – Aerosmith release their much-loved single “Cryin’.” 1996 – Record producer George Martin received a Knighthood, also music promoter Harvey Goldsmith became an MBE and Van Morrison an OBE. 2000 – Vandals pull Ronnie Van Zant’s casket out of the Lynyrd Skynyrd mausoleum, but are unable to open it. Steve Gaines’ ashes are also spilled during the rampage. 2000 – Rolling Stone Ron Wood checks into a rehab center to treat alcohol addiction. It’s believed Wood is hoping to dry out in time for a Rolling Stones world tour. 2004 – Courtney Love was reprimanded by Los Angeles Judge Melissa Jackson for turning up five hours late to a hearing. Love pleaded guilty to a single charge of disorderly conduct and was given a discharge, on condition she paid the victim’s medical bills, joins a drug programme and stayed out of trouble.

McCartney co-writes the 90-minute work with American-born composer Carl Davis to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Liverpool’s Royal Philharmonic. 1993 – The Manic Street Preachers played a sold out gig at the Marquee Club, London. 1996 – Def Leppard kicked off the North American leg of their 133-date Slang world tour at The Blossom Music Centre, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. 1997 – Radiohead went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their third album ‘OK Computer’. 1997 – The classic Pink Floyd album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ spent its 1056th week on the US album chart. 2000 – Chris Cornell, former lead singer of Seattle’s Soundgarden, and his wife, artist manager Susan Silver, become parents of a baby daughter when Lillian Jean is born. 2001 – Phish and the Grateful Dead are the big winners at the second annual Jammy Awards, held at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.

She later loses the case. 1975 – Bob Dylan officially releases the long-bootlegged Basement Tapes. 1977 – Eagles: Hotel California US LP is no. 1 chart topper 1980 – The Rolling Stones release Emotional Rescue and hold a party at New York’s Danceteria. 2003 – Rock behemoths Deep Purple are deluged with emails after announcing their new album will be called Bananas. Fans are irate over the ridiculous name. 2004 – UK prog rockers Muse play the biggest show of their careers when they headline the Sunday night at Glastonbury Festival. 2005 – Nine Inch Nails close the Coachella Festival in California. 2008 – Total Guitar magazine voted Celine Dion’s rendition of the AC/DC track ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ as the world’s worst cover version ever, the magazines editor Stephen Lawson said Dion’s cover was “sacrilege”.
